George 'Marvin' Whitney Sr.

George "Marvin" Whitney Sr., 85, a resident of Moses Lake, passed away Thursday, Jan. 29, 2015 in Moses Lake. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 13, 2015 at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens, 7800 Van Belle Road, Sunnyside, Wash. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Febr. 14 at Moses Lake Presbyterian Church, 1142 W. Ivy.

Marvin was born in Grandview, Wash. to Raymond and Myrtle Whitney on June 7, 1929. He graduated high school in 1947, and worked in construction and agriculture prior to moving to moving to Moses Lake in 1958. He was the district manager for Simplot Soilbuilders for 13 years. In 1968 he went into a joint venture with Jim Abrams Distributing. He retired from the oil business and Whitney Distributing in 1998.

Marvin married Iris Louise VanPatter in 1949 and had two sons, Raymond and George, before moving to Moses Lake. He was involved in coaching Little League baseball and was a Planning Commission member for several years. He was an avid supporter of the Grant County Fair, Rodeo Association, local 4H Clubs and the Fat Stock Sale. He also enjoyed golfing with his wife, friends and sons in eastern Washington. He also traveled to Arizona, Hawaii and Europe. A special highlight was meeting President Gerald Ford at a golf tournament in California.

Marvin was the middle child of six brothers and three sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Iris, his soul mate of 65 years; siblings, Charles, Floyd, Clyde, Ruby and Ruth Berg.

He is survived by his sons, Ray (Norma) and George (Lisa); grandchildren, Mark (Meg), Lauren (Clay Schuster), Nathan (Mariah), Pauline (Keaton Hille), and Rose; great-grandchildren, Royce Arthur and Whitney Jean; siblings, Phil, Fred (Ann), Ivan (Arlene), Jean (Ron Omberg); sisters-in-law, Dorothy and Violet; numerous nieces and nephews.
