Wahluke girls stumble in hoops season opener

MATTAWA — The Wahluke High girls opened their basketball season at Warden last Friday night and were disappointed in their performance.

Warden won the contest 70-30. Wahluke will move on to a home game with Kittitas tonight, a game at Cle Elum Friday and a visit from Goldendale on Saturday.

“Last Friday we were thoroughly outplayed,” coach Brock Anderson said. “Pretty disappointing in a lot of ways.”

Kaylynn Bailey had a good night, scoring 13 points and picking off nine rebounds against Warden. Gissell Torres had six points. The Warriors took more than 50 shots but made only 23 percent.

“The reason this was so disappoint was that our kids put in quite a bit of time this summer, team camp at Gonzaga and open gyms,” Anderson said. “Many kept track and took a few thousand shots between June and November.”

Unfortunately against Warden, the Warriors fell into a lot of old habits, but the team is still young. Half of the varsity is sophomores.

“We will get better,” Anderson said. “There’s a strong desire among the girls to become competitive this year. They are a wonderful group. We beat Othello at the jamboree, which was a promising sign.”
