Serving those who served

| August 27, 2015 1:45 PM

Grant County has a very large number of vets from all eras. Some of these brave men and women are on the edge of poverty and some are already there.

In the military, the term "Stand Down" means to stop normal operations and concentrate on something specific. In this instance we are hoping to reach all low-income veterans, service members and their families who may be in need some time of help or service.

The Veteran Stand Down Benefit & Job Fair is Sept. 12 at the Grant County Fair Grounds in the 4-H building from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Stand Down provides free supplies to vets and their families. There will be winter coats, boots, sleeping bags and many other new items for free. You must have your DD214 and pass income qualifications.

In addition, the VA will be on scene, along with many employers and service advocates. Free haircuts will also be available. Questions about Stand Down can be addressed to Eileen Boylston, who can be reached by phone, 509-766-4111 or email: Boylston@esd.wa.gov. For vet related questions, emails may be sent to: grantcountyvets@gmail.com. All of the members of Veterans Advisory Board for Grant County are volunteers so if it takes awhile to get a reply please be patient.

The Stand Down thanks Ziggy's for unloading the 24 pallets and two crates of items that will be passed out at the event. Thank you to Michaels, The Bistro, Bob's Café,' Manny's and Franz Bread Store for their generous gifts. There will be drawings for vets while visiting the advocates tables.

God bless the United States of America and all who live here.
