MOSES LAKE - Imagine creating your own robot from nuts and bolts and programing your creation to compete against other robots in completing an obstacle course.

Thanks to a $5,000 grant awarded through the Monsanto Fund's 2015 site grant initiative by Monsanto's Warden vegetable seed production site, Campfire of North Central Washington will be making this mechanized dream a reality for students. Representatives from the organization and Monsanto Fund celebrated the grant with a check presentation Aug 4.

Funds from the grant will be used to provide funding for competition kits and supplies. Children from the Royal area who want to join Camp-Fire are invited to do so.

"One robot kit can cost upwards of $6,000, and students can spend 500 hours over the course of the season building and programing one bot, not including competitions," said Kat Stebbins, Camp Fire's robotics team coordinator. "It is exciting to see these kids put forth such passion, determination and teamwork."

This is the second year that the Warden site has directed a grant to the Camp Fire of North Central Washington.

"Participating on a robotics team helps develop skills that can be used in agriculture, manufacturing and everyday life," said Bob Bainsky, Warden site operations lead. "They are definitely making an impact in the community by promoting science and technology around robotics, and providing an opportunity for students to excel outside the classroom."

This year, the Monsanto Fund awarded more than $1.2 million to nonprofit organizations through the site grant initiative to help address essential needs in communities. Youth organizations across the country have received 5.1 million from the fund since 2010.
