ROYAL CITY — The Grant County Sheriff's Office advises people and pets within a mile of Royal City business to go indoors after an ammonia leak this morning. The incident is under control but the sheriff's office has issued an order urging residents to be prepared in the event of another ammonia leak.

The GCSO issued a "Shelter In Place" order for businesses and residents within one mile of Royal Ridge Fruit, located at 13215 Rd. F SW, in Royal City.

A release of ammonia reportedly occurred at Royal Ridge Fruit earlier in the morning, but the ammonia dissipated from the area, according to the sheriff's office.

The ammonia is reportedly used at a refrigerant in the business's cold storage building.

The sheriff's office reports there is currently minimal risk to the public.

A Shelter In Place Order means:

  • • Bring family and pets inside.
  • • Lock doors, close windows, air vents and fireplace dampers.
  • • Turn off fans, air conditioning and forced air heating systems.
  • • Have an emergency supply kit readily available.
  • • Go into an interior room with few windows, if possible.
  • • Seal all windows, doors and air vents with plastic and duct tape.
