YAKIMA - Last week against Coeur d'Alene Moses Lake had difficulty establishing its run game.

Against Eisenhower? Not so much.

Moses Lake combined for 321 yards on the ground, led by running back Nathan Ball who rushed for 252 yards and three touchdowns.

"We blocked for him real well," head coach Todd Griffith said. "Things went well, it was a good game for us."

A stout defense kept the Eisenhower offense in check and Moses Lake (3-1) was able to win its Columbia Basin Big Nine opener, 41-0.

The focal point of the Cadet offense so far this year has been running back Luis Leon. Entering Friday's game against the Chiefs, Leon was a top five rusher in the CBBN

However, Moses Lake was able to hold Leon to just 72 yards on the ground.

"They ran the ball pretty well on a couple teams," Griffith said. "I think the kid had some yards last week against Wenatchee ... I don't know against us if they ever got inside the 30 (yard line)."

The Chiefs didn't have to pass much, but when they did it was met with success.

Quarterback Easto Castro completed five passes for 73 yards and two touchdowns.

Wide receiver Sean Zahller was on the receiving end of both scores.

With his big game, Ball became the second leading rusher in the CBBN with 583 yards. Ball only trails Davis' Lewis Jackson who has 666 yards on the year.

Moses Lake is on the road again this week for its last nonleague game against Post Falls.

"We have a pretty good idea of what they're going to bring," Griffith said. "We always know that they're a solid football team."

Moses Lake girls soccer sprints past Shadle Park

SPOKANE - Moses Lake forward Alysha Overland notched her second hat trick of the season and the Chiefs girls soccer team blew out Shadle Park, 7-1, in Spokane.

It was a sharp contrast to the 1-0 match played last year at Lions Field.

"You just never know," head coach Ric Char said. "The GSL (Greater Spokane League) is a really good league. Yeah, I guess you could say it was surprising for us to do that, but the girls played really well so when they do that it's not surprising so I guess it's a two-way street."

Overland put the Chiefs ahead less than a minute into the match.

Moses Lake (3-0, 5-1-1) was able to score two more goals in the first half after midfielder Liz McGraw's cross in the 21st minute turned into a Shadle Park own goal and midfielder Stephanie Overland punched in a header in the 35th minute off a corner kick by McGraw.

The Overlands combined for five goals and Stephanie was named the player of the game.

"She (Alysha) just looked blazing fast in the game yesterday," Char said. "Lucky for the program that we get two of those girls and her sister had an outstanding game yesterday. She was the player of the game. She just showed up to play."

Sofia Pizzillo scored the lone goal for the Highlanders in the 47th minute to draw the score to 4-1.

Stephanie answered immediately with her second goal of the match in the same minute off an assist by Alysha.

Jamie Loera stretched the Moses Lake lead to 6-1 in the 62nd minute and Alysha completed her hat trick in the 68th minute, using a corner kick from McGraw.

The Chiefs will resume Columbia Basin Big Nine play on the road Tuesday against West Valley (Yakima).

Tuesday's match could be a preview of this year's district championship as the Rams are also undefeated in CBBN play.

"They are the new kid on the block and we've prepared all season so I think we're playing our best team soccer so far this season," Char said. "Everybody's as healthy as we've been all season."
