Prep roundup: Soap Lake drops match to Lake Roosevelt

SOAP LAKE - Soap Lake entered Saturday's match against Lake Roosevelt looking for its first win of the season.

However, after leading two sets to one, the Eagles fell to the Pirates in five sets 25-21, 17-25, 25-20, 24-26, 8-15.

Soap Lake (0-3) was without key player Nelly Korneychuk who was suffering from an illness.

"That really did hurt us, but on the other hand, the team does have to learn how to play without relying on Nelly so much," head coach Christina Harvill said.

Without Korneychuk in the lineup, Esther Coreas excelled and racked up 4 assists, 8 digs and 11 kills.

"Esther Coreas really stepped up as a hitter and put some hard kills in for us tonight and her sister Jenny did a great job as libero in the back and really kept our defensive efforts going for the team," Harvill said.

Jenny had 4 assists, 9 digs and was 9 for 9 serving.

Lanie Babak recorded 8 assists, 3 digs and 2 aces.

Earlier in the week, Soap Lake was swept by Cashmere 27-25, 25-18, 25-23.

Despite the loss, Harvill was happy with the improvement her team made after opening the season with a loss to Bridgeport.

"We really stepped up our game since playing Bridgeport on Tuesday," she said. "We made some defensive changes that really helped our efforts tonight going against a much larger school such as Cashmere."

Babak was 15 for 15 serving with 5 assists.

Korneychuk and Marina Obzhylova added 2 blocks each.

Taylor Harvill was 12 for 12 serving with 9 digs, 2 blocks and 2 kills.

VOLLEYBALL

Warden lost its first match of the season in five sets to Lind-Ritzville/Sprague. The Cougars will look to bounce back. Tuesday at home against Cashmere.

Ephrata volleyball began its season with a three set loss to Omak.

After sweeping Wapato to start the year, Othello lost in four sets to Connell. The Huskies continue CWAC play Thursday at home against Toppenish.

GIRLS SOCCER

Ephrata won a tightly contested match on the road against Grandview, 2-1. The Tigers improved to 2-0 with the win and will travel to face Connell Thursday.

Othello rebounded from its loss 1-0 loss against Connell to start the season with a 4-1 win over Toppenish.
