Adams County Fair's opening day draws crowd

OTHELLO - The 2014 Adams County Fair kicked off Wednesday, drawing a crowd of more than 100 to Othello for the annual event.

This year's fair, "Sew, Grow and Show" continues through Saturday. In addition to animal showings, fair festivities also include food and commercial vendors, various exhibits, a demolition derby, two days of rodeo and entertainment by comedian juggler Paul Issak and bands The Wicks and Coody Beebe and The Crooks, among others.

Othello resident Stephanie Wells said she couldn't pick just one thing she enjoys about fair.

"I come here because it's just good to get out and see familiar faces," she said.

Wells came with a group of fellow residents from Coventry House to spend the day at the fairgrounds. She made her rounds of the commercial building, the exhibits and animal barns with them before it was time for a break.

"I bought a new belt, talked to the face painting people and now I'm eating lunch," said Wells.

And lunch was the same thing she had last year, a giant taco salad from one of the dozens of food vendors.

"Last year, I had this and it was so good so I knew what I was having before I even got here," she said.

Wells said she was glad she got to come to the first day of the fair. Other Coventry House residents are coming in groups over the next few days, she said.

Brothers Andrew and Phillip Greem, of Moses Lake, said they enjoyed the animals the most. They mostly hung out at the petting zoo and around the animal barns during the first day of fair, Andrew Greem said.

He said he and his brother came to the fair with their grandmother, although they ran off to see the animals almost as soon as they got there.

"The animals are just cool," he said.
