Local Molahiettes show support for Kaylee

MOSES LAKE - As Basin Seahawks fans were busy watching the season's opening game, a group of locals gathered together Thursday night to make aware the condition of one of their own.

More than 50 people, including the Moses Lake Molahiettes drill team, gathered at Lion's Field to show support for a former member of the Molahiettes.

Kaylee Stine, 18, of Moses Lake, was a member of the Molahiettes for four years during high school.

Just as she was preparing to attend college in the fall, Stine was dealt a devastating blow: a positive breast cancer diagnosis.

As her former Molahiettes teammates and friends gathered together on Thursday to show their support, Stine was in recovery from her first breast cancer surgery on Wednesday.

There is a 1 in 227 or .44 percent risk for women between the ages of 30 and 39 to develop breast cancer, according to breastcancer.org. Kaylee is 18.

"She was actually the youngest breast cancer patient that the Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle has ever seen," Stine's former Molahiettes coach Lori Baker said.

Baker reports that Stine is in good spirits, recovering from her surgery, and will soon be starting a six-week round of radiation treatments.

When Stine was dealt her diagnosis, Baker and the Molahiettes decided to do something about it, and started fundraising by selling T-shirts to help pay for Stine's care.

The T-shirts sold for $16 each, with $6 of every shirt bought going directly toward Stine's treatments costs. To date, the "Warriors for Kaylee" have raised $1,200 and are hoping to raise more for Stine and her family.

"On Oct. 17 we are going to completely deck out the Moses Lake Chiefs football game in pink, and raise money for Kaylee and other local cancer patients and survivors," Baker said.

Baker wants people to know that Stine is a fighter and has a positive outlook and attitude toward the future.
