MOSES LAKE - Horizon Credit Union employees will be helping community members get rid of sensitive documents this Friday during their shred day event.

A shred truck will be parked at both the Moses Lake and Ephrata Horizon branches from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Residents can bring old loan documents, bank statements, checks and other paperwork to get shredded, Horizon Regional Manager Juanita Richards said. The credit union has been providing this free service for about four years now, she said.

"It started out as a way to help protect community members' identities," said Richards.

She said people should be in the habit of destroying any documents with personal information such as a Social Security number or driver's license numbers to prevent identity theft. They host the shred day each year to help those who don't have a personal shredder at home or who don't have time to shred all their documents.

"Sometimes folks have a lot of things stored up or haven't cleaned them out in a while so we want to help make sure they have a safe place to shred it," said Richards. "We shred it on the spot with the truck so its not just sitting around or being sent to another place for shredding."

Employees will also be collecting donations for the Boys and Girls Club Friday. Horizon hosts a "Change for Children" fundraising campaign each year for the organization, said Richards.

"The proceeds from that day along with what we collect from customers in our branches will go to the Boys and Girls Club," she said. "We like to collect funds and present them with a check right before their big event in October."

Horizon's Moses Lake branch is located at 1704 S. Clover Dr.; their Ephrata location at 260 C St. SW.
