My friend Brian Nielson, of BJs Guide Service, had called me to say that the walleye fishing on Potholes Reservoir was off the charts good, so I had to run down and give it a try.

He met me at Mar Don Resort with our other fishing buddy James Labow and we headed across to the upper Medicare Beach area on the big reservoir. He had told me that even though the walleye bite was excellent that we should expect to get a lot of perch, too.

He had us rigged up with Slow Death Hooks and sparkle green Smile Blades tipped with nightcrawlers and we went to work. We were into walleye immediately and he was right, we got a lot of perch.

The walleye ran in size from 14 to 21 inches and we limited easily. The perch were so fat we just had to keep some.

We didn't keep anything under 11 inches and had 28 in the live well when we got to the Mar Don cleaning station.

It took us a while to fillet this catch, but we all went home with bags full of fresh walleye and perch. I can't wait to sit down to a meal of these tasty fillets.
