Crest Island in Moses Lake set ablaze

| October 14, 2014 6:02 AM

MOSES LAKE - Some foliage on Crest Island in Moses Lake caught on fire Saturday morning.

At 9:30 a.m., the fire and police departments received calls reporting some smoke coming off of Crest Island, near Cascade Valley.

Responders decided to let the fire burn itself out because of the wind and the island's location on the lake, according to firefighter Chris Mortensen.

The cause of the fire is unclear. There are transients believed to live on the island in tents, who may have played a part in starting the fire, according to fire department Capt. Brandon Burns.

The police department will handle the investigation, said Burns.
