Still no sign of man who jumped into Moses Lake
MOSES LAKE - There's still no sign of the 25-year-old Quincy man who fled police during a DUI stop Sunday and jumped into Moses Lake.
Police reportedly last saw the man go under the water about 100 yards from the shoreline near North Stratford Road. The Columbia Basin Herald is not releasing the name of the victim until his family has been notified.
The man was stopped just before 3 a.m. Sunday in the 500 block of North Stratford Road on suspicion of DUI. While police attempted to place the man in custody, he reportedly ran toward the lake and into the brush along the shore. More officers responded and attempted to cut the man off along the shore when he jumped into the lake, continuing to ignore requests to return to the shore, according to police reports.
The man reportedly began to struggle in the water and officers attempted to rescue him but couldn't reach him. The Moses Lake Fire Department also responded with water rescue equipment but the man could not be found.
Search and rescue units were on scene Sunday and Monday morning to attempt to find the man using an underwater camera, Moses Lake Police Chief Dave Ruffin said.
The man is presumed dead and the Moses Lake Fire Department and officers will be checking the lake and shoreline throughout the week.
