Cortez Big Nine POY, 7 Chiefs All-League
MOSES LAKE - After finishing as the top 4A team in the Columbia Basin Big Nine (6-4, 10-7-1) and 4A District 6 Champions, Moses Lake had ample representation when the 2014 All-Big Nine Boys Soccer Teams were released.
Senior forwards Johnny Cortez and Adrian Vasquez, senior midfielder Sean Cotton and junior defender Rehn Reiley all received First Team honors.
Cortez was also named the Big Nine Player of the Year.
Senior midfielder Andrew Camren and senior defender Tyler Courtright made the Second Team.
"We wouldn't be where we're at without the seniors," head coach Bill Bertram said after Tuesday's state playoff match. "I had a core of five seniors that worked their tails off."
Junior defender Drew Happer's Honorable Mention rounded out the seven Chiefs recognized.
Led by the trio of Cortez, Vasquez and Cotton, Moses Lake put together one of the most impressive offensive seasons in the school's history and won the district championship for the first time since 1999. The Chiefs led the Big Nine with 29 goals scored with 53 goals total.
"We scored more goals this year than we ever have in Chiefs soccer, you know, since the 90's," Bertram said after Tuesday's match. "We can score goals on anybody. That's a huge piece ... Tyler and Rehn in the back, Andrew and Sean in the center and Johnny and Adrian up top, even though Rehn's a junior, that's where all of my skilled players were and there's a reason why they're there.
"Not that the others aren't skilled, but skilled player meaning those guys that turn the tables on other teams and makes a difference in the score."
