Big Bend student receives honor society recognition
MOSES LAKE - Sarah Schutt, a student at Big Bend Community College, was elected as a district officer for Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for community and technical colleges.
Schutt was elected regional vice-president for District III, and received a distinguished chapter officer award. She was among the honorees receiving recognition at the national Phi Theta Kappa convention in April. Schutt was one of 30 recipients from more than 450 nominations.
It's the first time a BBCC student has been elected as regional officer, chapter advisor Barbara Whitney said. Schutt is the current president of the college's Phi Theta Kappa chapter.
The chapter also won several awards at the regional spring conference, including the Five-Star Chapter award and first place in chapter activity, for its STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) project. The chapter took second for its enhanced recycling project and second in distinguished chapter competition. Schutt took second in distinguished chapter officer competition and Maria Santillan took third as a distinguished chapter member.
