OTHELLO - Columbia Basin Health Association (CBHA), Othello Hospital and the Tri City Cancer Center are teaming up to provide potentially life saving screenings from 9 am to 1 pm on Saturday, March 22nd at the 14th Avenue Medical & Dental Center in Othello.

A number of local medical providers will perform the screening exams.

Both breast cancer and cervical cancer are very treatable when detected early. Cervical cancer is a slow growing cancer that most commonly takes 10 to 20 years to develop.

It is the first cancer in women to be identified as being caused almost exclusively by a virus.

A Pap test is the best way to screen for cervical cancer. Regular Pap tests will detect virtually all pre-cancerous changes and cervical cancers.

Breast cancer baseline mammography screenings usually start around age 40. However, women with a family history of breast cancer should be screened earlier. Women are also encouraged to do monthly self breast exams to determine if there are changes or lumps in their breast tissue.

Kelly Carlson, CBHA Director of Corporate Compliance, said the screenings on the 22nd will include a breast exam and a Pap test by a medical provider.

If it is determined that a mammogram is needed, the patient will be given a voucher enabling them to have a mammogram at the Othello Community Hospital.

"There will be no charge for non insured and underinsured patients," Carlson said. "Patients can call CBHA at 509-488-5256 to schedule an appointment. Please call me at the above number if you need further information."
