March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

"Some medical issues are difficult to talk about," Columbia Basin Health Association (CBHA) Director of Quality Dulcye Field said. "Colorectal cancer (cancer of the colon or rectum) falls into that category."

Colorectal cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer related deaths in the United States for both men and women combined.

It is estimated that approximately 140,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year; of that number, 56,000 people will die from the disease.

There are few symptoms associated with colorectal cancer in its early stages which is the reason that regular screening at age 50 is recommended.

Screening should begin early if there is a family history of colon cancer.

There are a variety of screening tools available including a colonoscopy which involves an invasive exam of the colon.

Another screening tool called the Hemosure iFOB test has been developed.

"This test is non invasive and one that is easily administered by the patient," Field said. "No preps or restrictions are necessary beforehand. Our medical providers will work with the patients to make certain they understand the test; patient confidentiality is always maintained."

Fields explained that CBHA has placed a high level of importance on the early detection of colorectal cancer. "CBHA is paying for this test to be run at no cost to the patient because we think it is very beneficial."

If this test turns out positive, further testing may be necessary.

"That is when the patient is evaluated by a medical provider for further testing, possibly to include a colonoscopy," Field said.
