MOSES LAKE - Big Bend baseball showed no rust after its season started a week late due to weather delays.

The team was able to squeak by Thompsons River, 2-1, Friday before the Viking bats woke up over the weekend.

Big Bend scored 52 runs in four games Saturday and Sunday that resulted in three wins.

"That was really encouraging to see because last year we struggled so much to score runs and this year these guys came out swinging," head coach Pete Doumit said. "We showed some power. We had three different guys hit home runs this weekend, we had a lot of extra base hits this weekend. So they were squaring the ball up very well ... I was very encouraged with the aggressiveness."

The Vikings (4-1) were able to sweep Saturday's double header against Green River and Thompsons River with a 16-2 win against the Gators and a 14-4 shellacking of the WolfPack. Big Bend continued its dominance of Thompsons River into Sunday with a 14-1 thumping.

"I think that there were areas that we were pleasantly surprised," Doumit said. "It was a baptism of sorts for our freshmen, there first collegiate experience, and I thought that they fared very well. I was very pleased with how they responded and some of them were put into real tests early and they did a great job."

The lone blemish on Big Bend's record came in an 9-8 loss to Green River Sunday afternoon. The game was shortened to seven innings due to the Gators' lack of available pitchers.

Big Bend was able to rally from a 6-0 deficit early in the ball game to take a 8-6 lead entering the final frame.

However, Green River was able to push three runners across home plate in the seventh inning to spoil the Viking's win streak.

"We just had to get three outs to complete a five game win streak and unfortunately we weren't able to do it," Doumit said. "That's the thing about baseball, it's a humbling game. You start to take something for granted or you just assume something and sure enough something's going to turn out a little differently than what you expect."

Sophomores Dylan Signorelli and Dusty Lyons as well as freshmen KJ Herbert, Kyle Wagner and Patrick O'Sullivan paced the Big Bend offense. All five currently have batting averages over .400.

The Vikings will look to continue their dominance over Thompsons River with a doubleheader at at home Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
