ROYAL CITY - Eight pieces by area high school artists, including two from Royal, will advance to the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) High School Art Show later this spring after being chosen as standouts in this year's ESD 105 Regional High School Art Show.

The juror for this year's regional show was Dr. Shari Stoddard, associate professor in art education and director of the Visual Art Teaching Program at Central Washington University. All entries were judged on the basis of mastery of the medium used, composition, and creativity, and with no information regarding the school or teacher from which the pieces originated.

"Young Dragon" a ceramic sculpture by Royal High School senior Nathan Perdue, advances to state. Perdue is a student of Michael Holmes.

This is the 5th consecutive year that Royal has had an entry advance to the state show. And this year there are two.

"Sunrise" a digital photograph by Royal High School 11th grade student Liliana Moreno is going to state. Moreno is also a student of Michael Holmes.

This year is a repeat for Holmes, who similarly had two of his students advance pieces to the state show last year. In addition to the 5-year streak, Michael Holmes' students have had art advance to the state show for eight of the nine past years.

With this week's awards, his students have now accounted for 12 entries at OSPI's show from 2006 through 2014.

The OSPI's statewide show will be on display from April 7-May 29 at the Old Capitol Building in Olympia. The awards reception will be held May 16 from 2-4 p.m. Awards of $200 cash purchases are expected to be given to 15 of the entries at the state show.
