Possible human bones found in river

| March 6, 2014 5:00 AM

CRESCENT BAR - Possible human bones were discovered in the Columbia River near Crescent Bar Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Grant County Sheriff's Office, a person walking along the river found the bones in an area usually covered with water. Many areas upstream are now exposed because of the drawdown of the river to relieve pressure on the cracked Wanapum Dam.

It is unknown how long the bones have been in the river and it is possible they have been there for a long time.

It is believed the remains may be of an early settler or a Native American, and leaders of the nearby Wanapum Tribe were on scene Tuesday afternoon.

The sheriff's office and the State Patrol Crime Lab will carefully collect the remains Wednesday for analysis.
