OTHELLO - Do you wake up in the morning with a dull pain in your head that steadily gets worse as the day goes on?
Or do your headaches start in the afternoon or suddenly occur anytime of the day or night?
If you are plagued with migraines and headaches, you are not alone. More than 37 million people in the U.S. are diagnosed annually with migraines, according to the National Headache Foundation.
June has been designated as the month nationally to increase awareness about this often debilitating condition.
"Sometimes it is difficult to determine what causes a headache," Columbia Basin Health Association Physician Assistant Annie Coronado said.
"Headaches are different for each person, with a number of causes and triggers. They can strike anytime of the day or night and can cause mild to severe symptoms.
"Severe headaches are a cause for alarm and should be treated medically. There are cluster headaches, chronic migraines, sinus headaches, vascular headaches, tension headaches. The list goes on and on."
According to Coronado, headaches can result from concussions, tumors, high blood pressure, eye strain, hypoglycemia, environmental and physical factors as well as many other diseases and health conditions.
"We all get the occasional headache," she said. "However, painful, persistent and life limiting headaches are not the norm and should be treated by a medical professional."
