July classes from sock puppets to robots at MAC

MOSES LAKE - Robots, sock puppets, doll houses, sculpture from clay and bottle caps are among the long list of classes scheduled for the Moses Lake Museum and Art Center in July. All classes are in the museum classroom, 401 South Balsam St.

Robots come to the museum for a week-long class beginning July 7, designed for children ages 9 to 14. Cost is $100 per child, $90 for museum members. Two sessions are scheduled, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. Izzy Curry and Maritza Armstrong are the instructors.

Participants will build a robot from a kit and learn to program it.

Children ages 3 and older will learn to how make sock puppets from 9 to 10 a.m. July 12. Adults should accompany younger children. Cost is $12 per person, $10.80 for museum members. Erin Stanley is the instructor.

The "Family Art Studio" will be open for two sessions July 12, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and 3 to 4:30 p.m. It's designed for children ages 3 and older; adults should accompany younger children.

The studio is stocked with paints, crayons and cardboard, and the kids can do whatever art they desire. Cost is $5 per child, per session, $4.50 for museum members.

Kids ages 6 and older, and parents if they choose, can learn how to make an affordable doll house July 14. The "DIY Dollhouse" class is from 10 a.m. to noon. Cost is $35 per session, $31.50 for museum members.

Participants use collage, office supplies and household objects to build a doll house and furniture. Freya Liggett is the instructor.

A class in hand-building clay and using a pottery wheel is scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday from July 15 through 31. Class is 6 to 8:30 p.m. and is open to people age 15 and older.

Linda Boswell is the instructor. Cost is $150, $135 for museum members.

A class in painting animals in the folk art style is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon July 16 and 17. It's open to children ages 7 to 12 and the cost is $20 per child, $18 for museum members. Kathaleen McFarland is the instructor.

Women get their chance with the paint brushes July 16 and 17, with classes in Van Gough-influenced paintings July 16 and Monet July 17. Classes are from 1 to 3 p.m. and are for girls and women ages 14 and older. Cost is $20 per person, $18 for museum members.

Kids can learn tool and rope making in a class from 1 to 3 p.m. July 19. It's for people age 10 and older. Martin Schempp is the instructor.

Participants learn how to use plant material to make rope and stone-on-stone techniques to make an ax head. Supplies are included. Cost is $30 per person, $27 for museum members.

"Papier Mache Lollapalooza" is a three-day class for people ages 9 and older; classes are 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. July 21, 23 and 24. Participants learn how to build, reinforce and decorate papier mache objects. Cost is $40 per person, $36 for museum members. Billie Bedford is the instructor.

A class in creating story puppets is scheduled for 1:30 to 4 p.m. July 21. Bedford is the instructor and will teach kids how to make a puppet using a glove. The class is for people ages 9 and older and is $20 per person, $18 for museum members.

Kids ages 8 to 12 can make objects from duct tape from 4 to 5 p.m. July 22. Stanley is the instructor. Cost is $20 per person, $18 for museum members.

Children ages 8 to 12 who want to learn to use the pottery wheel can sign up for a two-day class July 24 and 25. There are two sessions, 1:30 to 3 p.m. and 3:30 to 5 p.m.

Participants will learn hand building skills as well as basic wheel techniques. Schempp is the instructor. Classes are $30 per person, $27 for museum members.

Learning to draw like artist M.C. Escher is the subject of a class from 11 a.m. to noon July 25. The class is for children ages 8 to 12. Schempp is the instructor. Cost is $12.50 per child, $11.25 for museum members.

A class in making clay objects, starting with the coil and pinch methods, is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon July 28. The class is for kids ages 7 to 12. McFarland is the instructor. Cost is $20 per child, $18 for museum members.

McFarland also is teaching a class in making clay animals for children ages 7 to 12 from 1 to 3 p.m. July 28. Children will learn about the basics of working with clay. Cost is $20 per child, $18 for museum members.

Using bottle caps for jewelry and other objects is the subject of a class from 1 to 3 p.m. July 30. The class is for children ages 8 to 12 and is $20 per child, $18 for museum members. Stanley is the instructor.

Children and adults can learn to make masks from "creative paper clay" in a two-day class July 30 and 31. Classes are from 3 to 4:30 p.m. each day and is for people ages 10 and older. Cost is $45 per person, $40.50 for museum members. Liggett is the instructor.
