Ephrata Relay For Life is set for Saturday

EPHRATA - Hundreds of community members will take to the track at Ephrata High School on Saturday to show their support for cancer survivors during the Columbia Basin Relay for Life.

About 15 teams are currently registered to walk this year - a few more than last year - event chair Fred Goetz said. Their goal is to raise $65,000 for the American Cancer Society during the Relay, he said.

Teams have collectively raised almost $41,000 so far, according to their Relay for Life event page.

This year's opening ceremony begins at 10 a.m.

Goetz said participants will continue walking over the course of the day. For those who want to take a break from walking, there will be entertainment and various activities planned throughout the day.

The American Legion will also be at the Relay selling food. The group will donate a portion of their proceeds back to them, he said.

The luminary ceremony is scheduled to begin around 9:30 p.m.

Luminaries are a memorial to people who are fighting cancer or have died from cancer. Each luminary is inscribed with a name, and the candle inside is lit during the ceremony.

The event will wrap up after the luminaries are lit, and walkers will finish their laps by 11:30 p.m.
