MATTAWA - The Mattawa Area Food Bank is doing something a bit different this year for its major fundraiser. The board hopes you'll join the fun on Saturday, June 21.

"We are combining a bake sale, lunch and a tag sale," the food bank's Barbara Walters said. "For those who are more accustomed to something called a garage sale or a yard sale, it's the same thing."

The fundraiser will have the usual complement of baked goods, including pies, cakes, cookies, bread, and probably even some gluten-free items.

There will be a lunch, which is a 3-soup bar consisting of cheddar-broccoli, chili (including vegetarian chili) and chicken soup.

The tag sale part will include the usual suspects such as clothing, furniture, appliances, odds and ends, and not to mention, potential treasures.

The event which supports the bank's food for the needy campaign, will be held between 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

The Mattawa Area Food Bank is a vital part of the community's effort to wipe out hunger. It depends significantly on donations of food and other commodities from the generous folks who live in this part of the state, including individuals, businesses, farmers, orchardists and even a casino.

"However, we do need to purchase a significant amount of the staples our clients depend on, which requires us to do fundraising," Walters said.

The Mattawa Area Food Bank is blessed with a number of volunteers who give of their time unloading trucks, stocking shelves and freezers, as well as distributing food twice a month to anyone in the area who comes to the Food Bank. No one is ever turned away for any reason.

"Please mark your calendar for June 21 and come to purchase or donate, eat, and take home just what your Starting-Monday-Diet needs as well as that special item that is calling your name," Walters said.
