Cancer fight detailed at Relay For Life
MOSES LAKE - Even the cold, rainy weather couldn't dampen people's spirits during the opening ceremony of the Moses Lake Relay For Life Friday, as stories of hope and gratitude were shared.
"We are here to celebrate, remember and fight back against a disease that effects way too many," event chair Josie Ritter said.
The Relay For Life event is designed to remember those who have lost their lives to cancer and honor the survivors. The event also helps to raise awareness and funds.
Moses Lake Mayor Dick Deane began by sharing how his mother, brother, sister and son have all been victims of cancer.
He talked about how "we are in a war with cancer" because of how difficult it is to battle and how many lives it claims.
He also thanked the community for their efforts and for attending Relay For Life.
Thank you's and awards were given to committee members, sponsors and volunteers who made Relay For Life possible. This year had the highest number of corporate sponsorships. A total of $126,000 was raised, exceeding the expected goal of $115,000.
Michael Atnip, of Team Cut It Out, set a record by walking 40 miles (the equivalent of 120 laps)
Outgoing board member Cheri Stokes was also recognized.
Local children's choir, Voices Of A New Day, closed the ceremony with a song titled "It's All Good."
Survivors and caregivers only walked the first lap of the relay to celebrate their victory over cancer. During that first lap, Miss Moses Lake Roundup Queen Heather Fleming announced the names of each survivor participating.
