EPHRATA - A Soap Lake woman accused of attacking a 48-year-old man with a meat cleaver at an apartment complex last week pleaded not guilty in superior court Tuesday.

Charlotte A. Clark, 60, was charged with first and second-degree assault with a deadly weapon, first-degree burglary and residential burglary in the alleged attack June 3.

The victim received a large gash on the back of his neck when Clark allegedly entered his apartment on Division Street North in Soap Lake and struck the man with a rusty meat cleaver while he was asleep in bed. The man told police the front door was closed but not locked when Clark entered, according to court documents.

The man was able to wrestle the meat cleaver away from Clark, receiving a cut on his hand. Clark reportedly walked back to her home at the same apartment complex where police took her into custody. The bloody meat cleaver was recovered in the man's apartment.

The victim was treated and released at Columbia Basin Hospital in Ephrata.

Clark allegedly told the man his wife asked her to kill him the day before the alleged attack, which the girlfriend denied to police.

Clark is being held in Grant County Jail on $50,000 bail. The trial date has been set for July 30.
