Mattawa receives $4,000 in community grants
TOPPENISH - The community of Mattawa was one of the winners on May 21 in the annual community services grants awarded by the Yakama Nation Legends Casino.
The Mattawa Area Food Bank received $3,000, and Mattawa-Desert Aire Lions Club received $1,000. Legends gave out $400,000 to 185 area non-profits from the Yakama Cares Program and $458,413 to police, fire and health care from its Community Impact Fund.
Yakama Cares, an annual event, donates funds to create positive impacts in the community it serves, and it is funded through the Charitable Contribution Fund. Distributions have increased each year since 2008.
Non-profit organizations submit their applications annually between Jan. 1-March. The committee for the Charitable Contribution Fund received more than 510 applications to evaluate for the 2014 distribution.
"The applications undergo multiple rounds of cuts before the final selection," publicist Kim Harvey said. "The committee bases part of their selection on the areas of need identified in the community, and this year, those areas included programs dedicated to health and safety, senior citizens, youth and animals all located in communities that Yakama Nation Legends Casino serves."
The 185 organizations receiving a distribution represent communities from Goldendale to Mattawa and Pasco to Cle Elum. Grants awarded range from $1,000 to $8,000 per recipient including books, iPads and other educational programs for schools to uniforms or equipment for sports teams, food for programs, ADA compliance upgrades and assistance for healthcare costs.
The grant to the MAFB is intended for the purchase of bulk foods. The grant to the MDALC is to assist in service to the next person with sight or hearing issues.
