Royal's Joe Lang shines at state
ROYAL CITY - Portending a brilliant future, sophomore Joe Lang placed highly twice to lead Royal High last weekend at the 1A state track meets at Eastern Washington University.
Royal was represented by nine athletes. Only two, Dori Floren and Michael Valentine, will be lost to graduation.
Lang finished third in the long jump with a leap of 21-3.5. He took second in the triple jump at a season best 44-9.5.
Lang also competed in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles. He finished ninth and 11th respectively with times of 15.74 and 43.26.
Junior Jacob Lee finished 10th in the 800 with a personal best time of 2:04.08. He has his eyes set on the school record of 2:02 next year.
Senior Michael Valentine, who's been struggling with shin splints, cleared 5-10 for 11th in the high jump. His season best 6-0 would have put him in the top 8.
The best finish for the Royal girls was eighth by freshman Maggie Delay in the long jump at 16-7.5. She took ninth in the pole vault at 8-6.
Senior Dori Floren flew the discus 104-8 to finish 11th.
Freshman Gracelynn Miller was 15th in the 400 with a time of 1:05.88. Freshman Berenise Rodriguez finished 15th in the 300 hurdles at 51.07.
Finishing 16th in the 3200 was freshman Caitlin Diaz in 13:22.87. Sophomore Elsie Delgado took 17th in the 800 at 2:39.64.
