High school state tournament wrap up

SOCCER

Francisco Alejandrez's second half goal was the difference maker for the Jacks.

With the 1A State Boys Soccer championship match still scoreless, Alejandrez was able to power home a goal from 12 yards away in the 46th minute off an assist from Armondo Ortega and Pedro Reyes.

Quincy outlasted University Prep, 1-0, to capture its first boys soccer title.

The Jack defense limited University Prep to just four shots, two of which were saved by Quincy goalie Gildardo Avila while the other two were off target.

In contrast, Quincy was able to take 18 shots on goal.

Othello advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2A State Boys Soccer Tournament after a 1-0 win against Cheney in the first round. The Huskies fell to Toppenish, 3-0, in the quarterfinals.

SOFTBALL

Warden began its run through the 1A State Softball Tournament with an 8-1 win against Coupeville in the first round.

However, the Cougars were dispatched in six innings by Hoquiam, 14-4, in the quarterfinals.

Warden was eliminated after losing to Zillah, 7-5, in the consolation bracket.

Connell's bid for a fourth straight state championship ended when the team lost in extra innings to Elma, the eventual state champion, 6-5.

Othello fell just shy of a state championship, losing to Lake Washington 4-0 in the 2A State Softball Tournament championship game.

The Huskies opened the state tournament with a 10-0 win against Sultan. The Huskies defeated Fife, 5-1, in the quarterfinals and W.F. West in the semifinals, 9-3.

TENNIS

Moses Lake's Carina LeFave and Kylee McKay lost their first round match in the 4A Girls Doubles State Tennis Tournament against Myint-Zu Kyaw and Hanna Rehnfeldt, of Edmonds, 6-3, 6-1.

The pair rebounded with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Skyview's Olivia Coal and Darby Tinker in the consolation bracket.

LeFave/McKay were knocked out in the next round by Julia Lioubarski and Jasmine Ye, of Skyline, 6-3, 6-3.

Ephrata's Demi Brekhus and Teighan Moore took eighth place in the 2A Girls Doubles State Tennis Tournament.

Keestan Andersen, of Othello, lost her first two matches of the 2A Girls Singles State Tennis Tournament.

Andersen dropped her first round match against Sehome's Andrea Clawson 6-1, 6-0 and was eliminated by Olympic's Anne Marie Herbert 6-1, 6-0.

Ephrata's Stenn Monson and Garner Sears won their first round matchup in the 2A Boys Doubles State Tennis Tournament 6-1, 6-3 before losing their next two matches.

Sonny Fergoso and Rollie Ronish, of Quincy, took seventh place in the 1B/2B/1A Boys Doubles State Tennis Tournament.

GOLF

Moses Lake's Brody Milbrandt finished tied for 21st in the 4A State Boys Golf Tournament with a two-round score of 152.

Nick Sutherland and Kellan Roellich missed with cut with first round scores of 83 and 84, respectively.

Ephrata's Aaron Whalen tied for second overall at the 2A State Boys Golf Tournament with a score of 144.

Fellow Tigers Josh Johnson, Tember Newman, Mason Buchert and Sean Courture all missed the first round cut.

Kendall Sage, of Ephrata, tied for seventh overall at the 2A State Girls Golf Tournament with a score of 184. As a team, the Tigers finished fourth overall with 55.50 points.

Katie Hilliard finished tied for 16th with a score of 191 while Tressa Davis and Kaitlyn Autry missed the cut.

Othello's Kylie Kummer also finished the first round cut.

Conner Haynes finished tied for 39th at the 1A State Boys Golf Tournament with a score of 175.

BASEBALL

Soap Lake advanced to the semifinals of the 1B State Baseball Tournament after downing Mt. Rainier Lutheran, 3-0, in the first round. The Eagles fell to Oakville, 6-5, in the next round.
