MATTAWA - Comm"Unity" Days participants this August may find Hund Memorial Park more to their liking than in the past. There will be more seating.

There are new picnic tables in the park, donated by the Mattawa-Desert Aire Lions Club. They go well with barbecues previously donated by the Esperanza Housing Project.

In other Mattawa city news, the council recently decided to change the compensation package for the mayor. Instead of $500 in salary plus medical insurance, the mayor will be paid $1,000 monthly.

The council authorized the purchase of two computers in the city clerk's office. The current ones are Windows XP, which is no longer supported by Microsoft.

Computers using Windows XP that also use the internet are at a high risk of getting viruses and compromising the entire network. The two new units cost about $2,200.

The council heard from Nancy Morta, of Gray & Osborne Engineering, that the city's wastewater treatment system will require upgrades soon. It is 15 years old.

"This may require some rate changes," City Clerk Robin Newcomb said.

On the other hand, she added, there will be an income survey to see if the community qualifies for special grants. A lot will depend on how people respond to the survey.

The council approved the solicitation of bids for a city hall remodel using the small works roster. There will be four sections requested.

The first part of the bid will be the remodel of the car wash area into two office spaces with storage overhead. The other portions include council chambers, the evidence room and expansion of the northeast corner of city hall for the police department.

"It probably won't all be done at once," Newcomb said. "We'll get the bids at once, but each project will be done as we get the funds."
