Chiefs first in Pasco

PASCO - If there was any doubt who the best team at the Pasco Redneck Summer Wrestling Camp was before the duals started by the end Moses Lake had squashed any and all of it.

The Chiefs sprinted through their competition over the three days, finishing a perfect 22-0.

Head coach Jaime Garza, ever the competitor, was glad his team was able to best last year's second place finish.

"We went out there to improve on what we did before," he said.

Moses Lake met the host Pasco in the finals and recorded a 45-25 win after spotting the Bulldogs six points due to the Chiefs not fielding a wrestler at 98 pounds.

Moses Lake ran through Skyview (51-17) and Selah (66-3) early in the day.

Even strong 4A programs like Chiawana and Tahoma were not match for Moses Lake. Chiawana was dealt with by a score of 56-9 and Tahoma, a highly anticipated dual, fell 43-15.

Moses Lake also dispatched a combined Cashmere/Cascade team 63-9 en route to the finals against Pasco.

"As a whole I was really proud of these guys," Garza said.

Garza was also happy about the exposure some of the younger wrestlers received while at the camp.

Those who don't normally wrestle at the varsity level were able to be in the thick of tough duals against schools like Tahoma, Deer Park and Decatur.

"It was good for them to be around that atmosphere," Garza said.

Trey Long, Chase Clasen and Jesus Cornejo had an unblemished record over the three days of wrestling.
