Chiefs sweep weekend matchups

YAKIMA - Running the risk of dropping a second game to three-win Sunnyside, Moses Lake boys basketball opened the second half on a 17-0 run to solidify Friday's win.

The Chief front court dominated the Grizzlies as sophomore center Ceaser Sandoval and junior forward Tyson Karstetter combined for 33 points and 17 rebounds.

"We thought that we had a shot inside and we needed to go ahead and attack that interior," head coach John Hohman said.

Moses Lake grabbed two wins this weekend defeating Sunnyside, 62-36, and Eisenhower, 71-49. The Chiefs are tied with Davis for first place in the Columbia Basin Big 9 at 7-3. However, Moses Lake holds the tiebreaker over the Pirates after taking the first two head-to-head meetings.

Sandoval dominated both matchups, scoring 21 points against the Grizzlies and 20 points against the Cadets.

"He really played well and we got him the ball, which is important," Hohman said. "He's a load inside."

Karstetter also played well against Eisenhower, adding 18 points and three rebounds. Hohman felt his team had an advantage on the inside against the Grizzlies and Cadets.

Moses Lake is on the road this weekend against Wenatchee and Eastmont. The Panthers defeated the Chiefs in Moses Lake 71-58 Jan. 11 while the two games against Eastmont have been decided by a combined four points.

"Each weekend is a must, you have to have them," Hohman said.

Moses Lake girls extend win streak to eight

Moses Lake girls basketball extended its win streak to eight games after defeating Sunnyside and Eisenhower.

Since beginning Big 9 play 2-2, the Chiefs have won eight in a row and propelled themselves into first place at 8-2.

"We may not ever be perfect, but we want to strive for that," head coach Matt Strophy said.

The Chiefs were able to take care of the ball and limit Sunnyside's opportunities Friday and held on for a 67-58 win.

"We focused on playing team defense and I think we weren't perfect at it, but it slowed the game down," Strophy said. "We like to play fast, but they like to play fast too and they're very good at it."

Junior guard McKenna Walker scored a game-high 19 points. Senior forward Emily Olson and junior forward Avery Clark added 10 and 11 points, respectively.

Walker continued her torrid stretch scoring 16 against the Cadets while sophomore guard Jessie Loera scored a game-high 18 points.

Moses Lake was able to cruise to a 77-30 win against Eisenhower.

"Unfortunately for Eisenhower they lack the experience," Strophy said. "They're very young, so young and inexperienced and great new facility, but that being said this past summer their new facility wasn't open but they had torn down the old facility. So over the summer they were pretty much without a program."

Strophy and the Chiefs will attempt to extend the team's winning streak Jan. 31 against Wenatchee.
