Othello rips Red Devils, 62-13

OTHELLO - The third ranked Huskies continued their dominance on the mat with a decisive 62-13 victory against East Valley (Yakima).

Othello made quick work of the Red Devils scoring falls in five matches while East Valley (Yakima) forfeited another five.

Danny Cantu started the match for the Huskies with a 14-2 major decision over Tegan Ochoa at 145 pounds. Othello wrestlers walked away from the mat victorious in seven straight matches from 113-152 pounds, including four straight falls.

Alejandro Cardenas (113 .lbs), Reese Jones (126 .lbs) and Manny Martinez (132 .lbs) all scored first round pins.

Othello's Bubba Ruiz, ranked third in state at 285 pounds, was untested and was awarded the win after the Red Devils forfeited.

Fellow heavyweight Anthony Ruiz (220 .lbs) also won by way of forfeit.

This past weekend, the Huskies competed in the 2014 Ray Westberg Invitational and took third place with 180 points. Sunnyside, the top ranked school in 3A, won the tournament with 193.5 points.

Bubba was named outstanding wrestler from 152-285 pounds. Isaiah Barrera and Cardenas placed third at 106 and 113 pounds, respectively. Alec Lauriano (120 .lbs) finished second after sustaning an injury against Sunnyside's Jesse Barajas in the finals.

Martinez won the 132-pound weight class while Caleb Villareal (160 .lbs) finished fifth.

Jesus Montes finished tied for third in the 170-pound weight class and Anthony took fifth. Bubba finished first at 285 after three straight pins.

Othello will host Moses Lake tonight in a clash between two of the top teams in not only the Columbia Basin, but Washington state. The Chiefs are ranked second in the 4A classification while the Huskies are the defending 2A state champions.

The duel is scheduled to begin at 7:30.
