Grant County Man Dies from Influenza Complications

| January 13, 2014 5:00 AM

EPHRATA – It's fairly common for people to say, “Oh, it's just the flu” when they feel it coming on. But flu can kill.

The Grant County Health District was notified last week that a middle-aged Grant County man has died from influenza complications. Residents are being advised to take care of themselves.

“Since beginning of December, there has been a significant increase in influenza cases in all age groups,” said Dr. Alexander Brezny, Health District health officer. “There are certainly more cases than just those seen in the clinics or emergency rooms. It is not too late to get your flu shot, and stay home when you are sick. We are deeply saddened to learn of this loss.”

The Washington State Department of Health reports five other Washington State residents have died of influenza this season

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a higher than normal number of young and middle-aged adults with severe flu-like illnesses has happened this flu season. Nationwide, there has been an increase in hospital admissions for influenza, including an increase in patients needing intensive care.

The symptoms of the flu include temperature greater than 100F with a cough and/or sore throat. Those with the flu may also get headaches, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, fatigue (tiredness), and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea.

Not every person with the flu will have a fever. People who develop troubles breathing need to seek emergency care or contact their doctor immediately.

Flu shots are widely available in Grant County. Call your local clinic or pharmacy to schedule a flu shot. Adults may also visit the GCHD Moses Lake office on Tuesdays from 9-11 a.m. for a flu shot.

“Take care of yourself when you are sick,” Brzezny said. “The flu can be very serious. Please do your part and protect yourself and loved ones from the flu. Get a flu shot and stay away from others if you are sick.”
