Flu death reported in Grant County

GRANT COUNTY - A middle-aged Grant County man died from flu complications, according to a prepared statement from the Grant County Health District released Friday.

The health district was notified last week the man died from complications Dec. 27. The identity of the man was not released.

"We are deeply saddened to learn of this loss," Dr. Alexander Brzezny said, a health district officer. "Since the beginning of December, there has been a significant increase in influenza cases in all age groups. There are certainly more cases than just those seen in the clinics or emergency rooms. It is not too late to get your flu shot and stay home when you are sick."

The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention has seen a higher than normal number of young and middle-aged adults with severe flu-like symptoms during this flu season. The state Department of Health reported five other Washington residents have died this season.

Nationwide, there has also been an increase in hospital admissions for influenza, including an increase in patients needing intensive care.

While it is not possible to know which flu viruses will be seen during the entire 2013-14 flu season, swine flu (H1N1) has been the main virus strain so far, according to the health district.

Flu shots are widely available in Grant County and the health district says it's not too late. People should contact their local clinic or pharmacy to see if the shot is available. Adults can also visit the health district's Moses Lake office from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays. The shot cost $25. The office is located at 1038 W. Ivy St.
