Darrin Miller wins title at Royal Tournament

ROYAL CITY - Christmas was the holiday that kept on giving for Royal High's Darrin Miller last Saturday. The sophomore 170-pounder wrestled his way to a title at the annual Royal Christmas Tournament.

Several other Knights backed Miller with placings or advancement points to give Royal sixth place among 15 teams. Wahluke placed 14th.

The tourney was dominated by known powerhouses. Castle Rock took first place with 180 points. Warden took third, and defending state A champ Granger finished fourth.

Miller was dominant. His toughest match was an 8-3 final.

Miller started with a 43-second pin of Rueben Finn of Goldendale. Then he scored a 21-6 technical fall over Austin Knowlton of Tonasket.

After an 11-6 victory over David Cantu of Grange, in the semifinals, Miller defeated Austin Darvell of Castle Rock for the title.

Others to place for Royal were:

  • 113 - Abraham Medina, 5th place
  • 126 - Carlos Hernandez, 3rd place
  • 160 - Emilio Bustos, 3rd place
  • 182 - Carter Allred, 3rd place
  • 220 - Hunter Follett, 4th place

Placers for Wahluke were:

  • 106 - Sebastian Barajas, 5th place
  • 138 - Adrian Toscano, 4th place
  • 182 - Jack Yorgesen, 5th place
