Reader discusses moral values

Mr. Bo Nielsen's letter printed on Thursday, February 6th, shows a level of understanding and maturity that many adults seem to lack. One of the comments made on the CBH website proves that point.

Most elected legislative representatives seem mentally incapable of recognizing that laws only control law-abiding people. If you disarm law-abiding citizens, you increase their vulnerability to criminals! The Sixth Commandment, "Thou shalt do no murder" is sufficient to guide law-abiding people. Note the word "murder" rather than "kill." The commandment allows for self-defense.

Our main problem is the failure of both families and public schools to teach moral values starting at a very young age. Schools no longer teach either self-respect or respect for other people. Read Article 3 of the Northwest Ordinance; July 13, 1787 to understand that "Religion, morality, and knowledge, being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged."

People who lack the moral values of treating every person with respect are not going to be controlled by mere laws!

Every person has a Right and Responsibility with respect to self-defense. Article I, section 24, of the Constitution of the State of Washington must be enforced. See also Article X, section 1 as eighteen year old citizens are liable to military duty! Shouldn't people be trained from birth to respect the Rights of other people?

Not all threats to a person come from other people. Packs of feral dogs, bears, wolves, and other animals do not understand a person saying, "Go away!" While some animals are relatively rare in cities, feral dogs and coyotes have become more common.

A person properly trained to legally carry a concealed weapon recognizes their responsibility. It is highly unlikely that they will ever need to use it.
