ROYAL CITY - The Royal High girls played two of the top basketball teams in the SCAC last week, and the results were not pretty. Royal fell 61-23 to Connell and 69-24 to Burbank.

The difference between the two opponents was that Connell eased up in the fourth quarter and Burbank did not. Both started with 19-7 first quarters.

"We really came out flat with no intensity. We let Connell dictate the tempo, and it showed," coach Phil Daubel said.

Royal gave up a 20-2 second period and was down, 39-9, at the half. Nearly the same thing happened with Burbank, but that second period was 20-4.

"We had a rough week," Daubel said. "We got killed on the boards. We gave up too many second chance opportunities and too many easy shots from inside. In turn, they shot really well from the field, and we shot horribly."

Connell cut off every avenue to the basket. There was no inside success for the Knights. All but eight points came from guards Flor Araujo (8) and Jacky Guadarrama (7).

Araujo, Dory Floren and Brittany Hebdon grabbed six rebounds each. Guadarrama picked off three rebounds and added four steals.

Araujo was the scoring leader against Burbank with seven points. Hebdon and Kailee Harris scored four points. Harris, Hebdon, Guadarrama and Kayla Smith corralled four rebounds each.
