Kudos to Quincy Crime Stoppers
We applaud Quincy farmer Larry Schaapman and other community members for forming a Crime Stoppers group to help combat crime. Schaapman had his bales of wire stolen last summer and used his experience to help others with the formation of a local Crime Stoppers group. In a recent Columbia Basin Herald article, Schaapman stresses people who supply crime-solving tips to law enforcement can remain anonymous. The group is even exploring the idea of a reward system for tips.
People are getting fed up with crime in our area. This is shown in a Jan. 28 Herald article, in which a Moses Lake business owner confronted a suspected burglar, who later fled from police. It was reported the suspect allegedly stole several tools and other items from the business. We aren't suggesting property owners and residents risk their lives during these confrontations, rather we wanted to show you how frustrated people have become. We support good, working partnerships with law enforcement and hope you take the time to get to know the officer patrolling your neighborhood.
Joining forces in a community is the right thing to do. We believe residents benefit when they watch out for one another. Making a concerted effort to be a good neighbor is something we should all do. When was the last time you informed a neighbor about your vacation so they could keep an eye on your home? Seemingly small gestures like this make for safer neighborhoods and streets. Getting out and meeting your neighbors is another way to help raise awareness. After all, we're stronger together.
