Same neighborhood hit twice by drive-bys

| February 4, 2014 5:00 AM

MOSES LAKE – Two drive by shootings rocked the Larson Housing Area on Saturday, Jan. 18, and Monday, Jan. 20, but the Grant County Sheriff's Department is not certain whether they are related.

Sheriff Tom Jones is asking anyone with information about either incident to step forward. You may call the Grant County Sheriff’s Office at 509-762-1160 or crimetips@co.grant.wa.us. Reference case number 14GS00782.

No one was hurt, but two vehicles were struck by bullets during the drive-by shooting on the 18th. Several citizens called 9-1-1 about 7:45 p.m. after hearing multiple gunshots in the 1200 block of Arlington Drive.

According to Jones, witnesses described the shots as coming from a dark-colored 1997-2002 Pontiac Grand Am with at least two male occupants. The vehicle fled the area.

Two parked vehicles were struck by gunfire, and bullet fragments were recovered and sent to the Washington State Patrol crime lab. The motive and the target of the shooting are unknown. ?

On Jan. 20, a 16-year-old received non-life-threatening injuries in what appeared to be a targeted drive-by shooting. Deputies were called to the 1200 block of Arlington Drive at about 4 p.m.

Neighbors reported hearing multiple shots, Jones said. Deputies also learned the 16-year-old victim was riding his bike on Arlington when he was passed by a white car, believed to be a Kia. The car, occupied by two males, made a u-turn and headed back toward the victim.

The passenger in the car opened fire on the victim with a handgun. The victim rode his bike in between two homes in an attempt to get away from the shooter. The car then stopped, the shooter got out of the car, ran in between the two homes and continued to fire on the victim. The shooter then returned to the car, and the car sped away.

The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the right shoulder and another to the right forearm. His injuries are not life threatening, but he was taken by ambulance to Samaritan Hospital. ?

Investigators believe this was a targeted attack and not random. It is uncertain if this was a gang-related shooting or if there is any connection to the Saturday night drive-by shooting.
