Warrior boys split two games
MATTAWA - Splitting two games last week, the Wahluke High boys took a 61-38 non-league contest from Kittitas and dropped a 58-46 SCAC East contest to Burbank.
Kittitas came to Wahluke on a 7-game winning streak and was playing well. The Warriors had been playing strong but were having problems putting the ball in the basket.
But Tuesday night things went the Warriors' way as Wahluke jumped out quickly, taking a 22-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. Kittitas fought back and outscored Wahluke 20-14 in the second period.
Then the Warrior defense came out fast from the break and shut the Coyotes down, allowing only one bucket by Kittitas to 19 points for the Warriors.
The Coyotes still kept playing hard but could not make up the difference.
Scoring for the Warriors was: Collin Ahmann 16, Librado Barajas 13, Saul Ramos 5, Oscar Onofre 8, Alan Caro 17, and Jose Espindola 2.
Burbank sits alone at the top of the SCAC East with only one loss. The Warriors had to believe they were in for a tough Friday night and would have to play an all-around solid game to have a chance. That didn't happen.
Wahluke started the game as it has most of the season, with a lid on the basket. The Warriors spotted Burbank a 15-3 lead before shots went in. Those 12 points were right where the game stayed.
"We shot a dismal, and normal, 30 percent from the field but continued to play great pressure defense which kept us in the game," Ahmann said.
The scoring for the Warriors was: Ahmann 6, Barajas 5, Ramos 3, Onofre 10, Eduardo Ponce 1, Caro 14, and Espindola 7.
