Tired of being idle, retiree starts classes
DESERT AIRE - Marta Tridle retired from an engineering position at Boeing in September and settled into her permanent home here but, within two months, she tired of being idle.
So Tridle is starting Zumba (dance-exercise) classes at the Sagebrush Senior Center in January. First she will give potential Zumbaists free introductory classes on Dec. 15 and Dec. 22 at 8 a.m.
"Come ready to work out and have fun," Tridle said. "You may sign up for classes starting in January. Sorry, no child care available."
Participants must be at least 18 years old, Tridle said. Membership in the Senior Center is not required. Women and men are welcome.
According to Tridle, Zumba was started in 2001 in Miami and is a Latin and International dance fitness class. It combines aerobics, interval training and resistance training for total body toning.
Tridle has been doing Zumba for about four years. First she was a participant and then an instructor. She was trained and certified in Yakima.
"Zumba is a very fun way to stay in shape. I never was one for working out on the machines," Tridle said. "Zumba is for everyone, old, young, women and men. It is great to share Zumba and help others maintain healthy lifestyles."
Tridle, a certified instructor in Zumba Basic, is not new to Desert Aire. She's been coming to Desert Aire for more than 20 years, mainly to water ski on the river.
"I fell in love with the place and bought a lot for my motorhome, coming mostly on the weekends to enjoy the sun and water," she said.
Tridle decided this would be a great place to retire. So eight years ago she sold her lot and purchased a house. She moved here in September and quickly learned that retirement is not what she expected.
"When you retire, it is hard to go from working everyday to doing nothing," she said. "So I thought it would be a good idea to start up a Zumba class here in Desert Aire. It is a great way to meet people and have the added benefit of exercise."
The January classes will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays at 8 a.m. at the Sagebrush Senior Center on Desert Aire Drive. The first class will take place Jan. 5.
The cost per month will be $30 or $5 a class. Attire is workout clothes and comfortable shoes for dancing. Running shoes are not advised but cross trainers are okay.
