Michael Wiley "Mike" Walters
Michael Wiley "Mike" Walters, 83, longtime Moses Lake resident died in his home Nov. 18, 2014. Mike was born June 23, 1931 to Deborah Lawrence Wiley and Perl A. Walters, into an upper-class home outside Chicago, Ill. Despite his affluent upbringing, Mike lived a life of service during which he focused much more on making a difference than he ever did on making a fortune.
Mike enlisted in the Marine Corps and honorably served his country. After his military service, he enrolled at the University of Illinois where he began his involvement in athletics, placing in the NCAA tournament as a member of the gymnastics team.
Mike is survived by his loving wife, Nancy, three children, five grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. Mike's reach extended far beyond his own family. As a coach and teacher, he helped kids transition into adults and athletes achieve lofty goals; most importantly, he set an example that lasted long after high school graduation. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, coach, mentor, and a role model to countless people.
Throughout his life, Mike personified his mantra, "if it were easy, everyone would do it." Whether it was taking into his home a talented wrestler involved in a difficult circumstance or mentoring his young grandchildren, Mike never opted for the easy alternative. Mike consistently did what others would not, and in so doing helped so many achieve what they otherwise could not on their own. In spite of his good-natured contrariness or his preference for handshakes over hugs, Mike showed his love and devotion everyday through his actions that will never be forgotten and which left the world a much better place.
Per his request, no services will be held.
