MATTAWA - The Mattawa Comm"Unity" Days contest winners have been announced. There were several.

First place in the parade went to the dancing horses entry. Second place was won by the Mattawa Community Medical Clinic float, and third place went to the Our Lady of the Desert Catholic Parish unit.

In the Salsa (making, not dancing) competition, first place went to Mirelia Trinidad. Alejandra Perez won second place, and Rosa Nolasco finished third.

The Belly Busting Burrito Competition, sponsored by Mattawa Mart (76 gas station) and Wind River/U.S. Cellular, drew a large viewing crowd. It followed the rules that Mattawa Mart has for the Belly Busting Burritos.

It's a lot like Man vs. Food on TV. The winners are the participants who eat one entire burrito super-giant Mattawa Mart burrito in 20 minutes. All participants receive an equal value prize for participating.

Inducted into the Burrito Hall of fame for winning a second time were Jack Yorgesen (finished in 15 minutes) and Arturo Valdez (finished in 7 minutes).

Sent to the hall of shame were Cesar Arrieta and Fernando "the bull" Valdovinos. Both walked away from the competition before the 20 minutes.

The MCD was a success despite a scare that the free breakfast would not come off. The MCD sent out a special "thanks" to Zirkle Fruit for the apples and Tree Top for the apple juice.

"Yorgesen Farms covered what was needed, WEO volunteered to cook," MCD chair Maggie Celaya said.

MCD served breakfast to more than 300 people.

"A special thank you to Liliana Celaya for taking time from her busy summer to make the plaques. To the city staff who volunteers their time to help. To the families of the Comm"Unity" Days committee who support us," Celaya said.

"To the Comm"Unity" Days committee for countless hours planning to make these days fun for our community. To Mary Garfias, Lola Chiprez, Monica Rubalcava, Dana Fox and members of La Iglesia Apostolica de la Fe en Cristo Jesus of Desert Aire for organizing Friday's events."
