MOSES LAKE - Hundreds of Basin students are a little more prepared for the start of school this week, thanks to Serve Moses Lake's Back 2 School event Saturday.

About 100 volunteers were on hand at Endeavor Middle School to give children haircuts and distribute school clothes and backpacks with new supplies in them. This is the third year they've held the event, Serve Moses Lake Director Tim Cloyd said.

Nearly 650 people attended Back 2 School last year. He said this year, he thinks that number will be closer to 800.

"This year feels a little bigger," Cloyd said. Which is a good thing, he said.

Back 2 School is Serve Moses Lake's way of making sure kids in the community have everything they need to have a good school year. Dozens of area churches are involved in Serve Moses Lake, and both volunteers and donations for the event come from them, he explained.

"We all just have a heart to bless Moses Lake families and want to make sure their students start their school year off right," he said. "This is all our churches coming together and doing something for our community."

Cloyd said volunteers also wanted kids to have fun, which is why Back 2 School also featured live music, a bouncy house, face painting, various crafts and a barbecue.

"Back 2 School is like a last hurrah," he said. "It's a fun way to kick off the school year and say goodbye to summer vacation."
