James L. Brown

Long-time Moses Lake resident James L. Brown passed away early in the morning of August 13, 2014 at the age of 93 in Samaritan Healthcare in Moses Lake, Wash.

He was born in Gadsen, Alabama December 15, 1920 to Ola Mae Wrenn and William Charles Brown. He enlisted in the US Navy July 2, 1940. He survived the attack on Pearl Harbor and went on to fight in several major Pacific battles (Gilberts and Marshalls, Solomon Islands, Guadalcanal, Rabaul, Iwo Jima). He served on the USS Clark (DL 361) and USS Little (DD 803). His last battle was Okinawa where his ship, the USS Little, was sunk. He and his surviving shipmates were in the water for almost eight hours before being rescued.

After his Honorable Discharge from the Navy on July 8, 1946, James went to work for Standard Oil and raised his family in Southern California. Gradually moving north, he finally ended up in Moses Lake, working in real estate sales until he actually retired.

Preceded in death by his wife, Beulah, James is survived by his sons Gerald (Donna) of Moses Lake, Tom (LaVonne) of Auburn, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Interment will take place in Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Wash.
