MATTAWA - The Mattawa Area Comm"Unity" Days is planning a free breakfast on Saturday morning of the festival scheduled for Aug. 15-16.

But, with less than a month to go, the committee doesn't have the funding. It reports that donations have been slow to come in. It hopes donations pick up in the next two weeks.

Items needed for the breakfast include pancake mix, precooked sausages, small orange juice, small apple juice, water, butter, syrup, napkins, disposable plates, butter knives, forks, coffee, cups.

The committee reports that it still has spots open for informational booths. It has confirmed the Mattawa Clinic, Columbia Basin clinic, Costco and U.S. Marines. More agencies are welcome to participate.

"We also have spots for food vendors and any nonfood local vendors," the committee reported in an email.

The committee reported that Iglesia Apostolica de Cristo Jesus (Josefina's church) has volunteered to sponsor Friday's Kiddie Day events. Church volunteers will have games and a free movie for kids. The committee has decided that in appreciation for the sponsorship, it will not charge the church for its booth on Saturday.

According to the committee, there will be a battle of champs in the Belly Busting Burrito contest. Word is that Jack Yorgesen (2012) and Chato Hernandez (2013) will compete and have their own personal showdown.

The fun run, chaired by Sharee Zirker and the DYW girls will cost a $20 registration fee, which will cover the cost of a commemorative shirt. The 5K run will begin at 8 a.m., and the 1-mile will begin at 8:15 a.m.

The committee reported that Wahluke Junior High Dean of Students Sean Langdon's band, Groove Principal, will entertain on Saturday in the park. There will be dancing horses.

Park activities will include a 5-on-5 soccer tournament at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Registration will be $10 per player, for all genders, ages 13 and up, CoEd teams. For more information, contact Cele Lopez 509-439-9751.
