Ageism expressed in previous letter regarding PCOs

| August 1, 2014 6:00 AM

This letter is in response to the letter from Ann Mix & Dave Bolton titled The Race for PCOS. In the letter from the July 24th edition of the Columbia Basin Herald stating their endorsement for Brent Bishop, Wheeler 1 precinct, and Barbara Morgan, Moses Lake 7 precinct, as Precinct Committee Officers it insinuates that the current PCOs are not doing their job "because they are busy with businesses and families." They encourage you to vote for a candidate that is retired instead. Let me assure you that the current PCOs in those precincts are both highly involved and dependable members of the Grant County Republican Party. They show up to every executive board meeting, every state party meeting, and participate in special committees such as event committees, candidate committees, etc. They are both committed to the Republican Party Platform, and holding our elected officials accountable to that platform and the Constitution of the United States of America.

Susan Freeman, Wheeler 1 PCO, is the State Committee Woman. She attends every meeting for the GCGOP and is a regular attendee at various Conservative groups throughout the county. Despite owning her own business she is more involved than most of the PCOs.

Casey Cooper, Moses Lake 7 PCO, is the State Committee Man, and also the Candidate Committee Chair. He works long hours to fullfill commitments to both his job and the party. People Casey's age have a sense of duty to work hard for their families. Senator Janea Holmquist, and Rep. Matt Manweller, both have young families as well.

The very idea that people should not be involved in the party unless they are retired, unemployed, or "not busy" is a disservice to the Republican principles of this country. Every American has a civic responsibility to participate in their government. The ageism expressed in their letter saddens me as a young, working, mother of 2 and a new Precinct Committee Officer myself. Both of these current PCOs are examples of never being too busy to serve your civic duty.
