National Infant Immunization Week begins April 26th

| April 24, 2014 6:05 AM

Luis Javier (LJ as everyone calls him) was born January 11, 2014. His parents, Iris and Luis Pruneda-Martinez, are delighted with the arrival of their first child.

"LJ is growing so fast and learning new things all the time," Iris said. "He responds with a big grin when we talk to him."

LJ has already become acquainted with Dr. David Hofheins, CBHA physician who will play an important role in keeping him healthy as he grows.

"Infant immunizations start when a baby is two months old," Dr. Hofheins said. LJ is right on track. He had his first set of baby shots on March 17th.

"We already have an appointment to bring him in on May 17th when he is four months old," Iris said.

Immunizations are considered to be one of the 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Over time, successful vaccination campaigns have contributed to the elimination or near elimination of some diseases in the United States, like polio.

However, rates of some diseases are increasing and could continue to do so if vaccination rates decrease.

"When this happens, all children are at risk for those illnesses," Dr. Hofheins said.

The Columbia Basin Health Association (CBHA) sends parents of infants well child reminder cards when they are due for immunizations and an exam to help determine if the baby's development is on track. Little LJ is too young to know that by the time he is two years old he will be protected from 14 potentially serious childhood diseases.

"I have these important dates marked on my calendar," Iris said.

As LJ grows, he will need booster shots at various ages.

Dr. Hofheins said vaccinations also are important in helping to maintain health and wellness across a lifetime and vaccines are recommended for people of all ages.

Patients should contact their family physician to determine if they are up to date on their immunizations.
