Big Bend surges up standings

MOSES LAKE - A week ago, the playoffs seemed to be an afterthought for Big Bend baseball (7-9, 17-11).
The team had lost four in a row and sat in second to last place in the NWAACC East. But after winning five out of six, the Vikings narrowly trail Yakima Yalley for the fourth and final playoff berth in the East.
Recently, the Vikings knocked off second place Treasure Valley, 5-1, before dropping the nightcap, 3-0.
In game one, Big Bend opened the scoring when Reign Letkeman and Jon Dailey hit back-to-back doubles. Dailey's shot scored Letkeman.
Dailey wasn't finished as he increased Big Bend's lead to 2-0 when he pounded a solo shot in the fifth inning.
The first baseman finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Big Bend added three more runs in the eighth inning to put the game out of reach.
Daniel Deaton pitched eight innings, struck out five and allowed one run. Jordan Higley came on in the ninth for the save.
The Vikings travel to face Yakima Valley in a doubleheader on Wednesday with serious playoff implications. The Yaks currently occupy the fourth playoff spot in the East region.
Viking softball's skid continues
Big Bend's losing streak moved to 11 in a row after the team dropped two games to Yakima Valley, 7-3 and 8-7, and two games to Wenatchee Valley, 4-1 and 8-5.
The Vikings (1-17, 3-21) are now in last place in the NWAACC East and will look to end their skid Friday against Treasure Valley on the road.
